Subject: | Lewis and Clark Resolution |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution urging the United States National Park Service (Park Service) to complete the Eastern Legacy Special Resource Study and recommend inclusion of the Eastern Legacy sites, including 67 Pennsylvania counties, in the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. As you may know, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led an expedition in the early 19th century that traversed thousands of miles of the uncharted wilderness of what eventually became the central and northwestern United States. This expedition, oftentimes referred to as the Corps of Discovery, was instrumental in opening these lands for the settlement that ultimately began the westward expansion of the United States of America. The route traveled by Lewis and Clark, which extends from Wood River, Illinois to the Columbia River in Oregon, was subsequently memorialized as the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail in 1978. While the expedition focused on the aforementioned unexplored lands, the seventeen states (including Pennsylvania) that made up the United States of America at the time were instrumental in planning and implementing the expedition. As such, in 2008, federal legislation was enacted to study extending the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail to include these eastern areas. Shortly thereafter, the Park Service initiated the Eastern Legacy Special Resource Study shortly to make this determination. As of this date, this study has not yet been completed. Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution urging the Park Service to complete this study and in doing so, add the Eastern Legacy sites, including all 67 Pennsylvania counties, to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. |
