        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           OCTOBER 7, 2003

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of October 2003 as "Pennsylvania Wine
     2     Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania growers produce many of the finest
     4  fruit products available in the world; and
     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania was the home of the first winery in the
     6  American colonies; and
     7     WHEREAS, The nation's first commercial grapevine nursery was
     8  in Montgomery County; and
     9     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's moderate climate and rolling terrain
    10  provide some of the best growing conditions on the East Coast;
    11  and
    12     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to two vineyards with the


     1  highest elevations east of the Rocky Mountains; and
     2     WHEREAS, More than 70 Pennsylvania wineries produce a
     3  delightful array of wine varieties, perhaps more than any other
     4  wine region; and
     5     WHEREAS, The roster of award-winning Pennsylvania varietals
     6  includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Catawba, Cayuga, Chambourcin,
     7  Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Reisling,
     8  Seyval blanc, Vidal blanc and Vignole; and
     9     WHEREAS, Family-owned agricultural operations create unique
    10  offerings of wine and have developed a special brand of
    11  hospitality; and
    12     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania produces in excess of 12,000 tons of
    13  wine grapes, contributing to the State economy by more than
    14  $50,000,000 annually; and
    15     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania ranks 8th in the country for the
    16  production of wine; and
    17     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania wineries are growing as tourist
    18  destinations, with 900,000 visitors per year; and
    19     WHEREAS, October is an important month of harvest for
    20  Pennsylvania wine grape growers and an ideal time to recognize
    21  vineyards and wineries for their contributions to the economy
    22  and quality of life in this Commonwealth; therefore be it
    23     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives, in recognition
    24  of the significant and invaluable contributions of the wine and
    25  wine grape community to our history, our economy and our quality
    26  of life, designate the month of October 2003 as "Pennsylvania
    27  Wine Month."
