WHEREAS, Approximately 1.25 million American children and
adults have type 1 diabetes; and
WHEREAS, Type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile
diabetes, is usually diagnosed in children and young adults; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 5% of individuals with diabetes have
type 1 diabetes; and
WHEREAS, Children and young adults can learn to manage type 1
diabetes with the help of insulin therapy and other treatments
and go on to live long, healthy lives; and
WHEREAS, Each year, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with
diabetes; and
WHEREAS, In the United States in 2015, 79,535 death
certificates listed diabetes as the underlying cause of death
and a total of 252,806 death certificates listed diabetes as an
underlying or contributing cause of death; and
WHEREAS, Diabetes is currently the seventh leading cause of
death in the United States; and
WHEREAS, In an effort to focus the nation's attention on this
ever-growing disease and its impact on millions of Americans,
November has been recognized as "National Diabetes Month"; and
WHEREAS, Advocates nationwide join together as a united
community during this month to raise awareness, promote ongoing
diabetes education and support those living with diabetes; and
WHEREAS, The American Diabetes Association is dedicated to
the research, education and advocacy necessary to improve the
lives of all individuals living with diabetes and its
potentially deadly consequences; and
WHEREAS, Continuing advocacy and healthy disease management
promotes the American Diabetes Association's vision of a life
free of diabetes and all of its burdens; therefore be it
