Subject: | Rep. McCarter - Banning of Bisphenol A (BPA) in Children's Products |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would prohibit the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in all products used by children under the age of four. Bisphenol A is an estrogen-like chemical that has been suspected of disrupting human growth. This chemical can be especially dangerous for infants and toddlers and can be sometimes found in numerous plastic items, including toys and pacifiers. The Federal Drug Administration has recently banned use of BPA in baby bottles and drinking cups used by infants and toddlers. While this is an important first step, additional steps must be taken to remove it from all products that infants and toddler use. Currently, items such as toys and pacifiers remain exempt. My bill would ban the use of BPA in any product whose primary use is found with infants and toddlers. The plastic industry is already making materials designated as “BPA-free;” this bill would simply require that all specified products be made with these materials. |
