Subject: | Increase E-911 Surcharge |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending the Title 35, Health and Safety raising the current E-911 surcharge with the addition of a $1 fee to wireless providers. The legislation also seeks to extend the surcharge sunset date. Increasingly, telephone customers are unsubscribing from landline telephone service in order to cut down expenditures, extending their wireless service to home use. Due to the declining number of landline customers, this legislation seeks to increase the surcharge by adding a fee of $1 to be charged to wireless providers. This measure is necessary in order to ensure the future viability of the 911 Emergency Services Fund. Additionally, the current surcharge sunset date contained in the Public Safety Act is set to expire in 2014. This legislation will amend this date, extending the date to 2016. When our constituents are in danger, the good people at the 911 call center are there to help. By raising the current surcharge with the addition of a wireless provider fee and extending the surcharge sunset date, this legislation will obtain its goal of ensuring a consistent flow of capital to the 911 Emergency Services Fund. Each and every citizen of this state depends upon reliable emergency services when emergencies occur. It is imperative that we move forward by amending statute to reflect the changing statistics concerning telephone service and how our citizens utilize them. Assuring a continual, uninterrupted flow of contributions into the 911 Emergency Services Fund, the citizens of Pennsylvania can find security in the knowledge that Pennsylvania’s 911 service remains state-of-the-art, providing security and safety to all residents. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
