MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 4, 2013 04:01 PM
From: Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown
To: All House members
Subject: RESOLUTION: DESIGNATING MARCH 5, 2013, AS CRISPUS ATTUCKS DAY

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution to honor American hero Crispus Attucks by declaring March 5, 2013, as Crispus Attucks Day. It is my sincere hope you will join me in this effort.

Crispus Attucks was born to a slave father and Natick Indian mother in or around 1723 in Massachusetts, and it is believed he ran from slavery and lived the rest of his life as a freed slave. On March 5, 1770, British regulars killed five colonists in Boston, an act which was later known as the Boston Massacre, and it is recognized that Crispus Attucks was the first to fall in this event. His is the only widely recognized name of the five victims.

The states of California, New Jersey, and Massachusetts each have legislation designating the fifth of March as a day to recognize and respect the importance of Crispus Attucks and the Boston Massacre.

Please join me in encouraging the General Assembly to honor the legacy of Crispus Attucks, the first martyr of the Boston Massacre and one of the first to lose his life in the fight for American freedom. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this measure, please contact Fran Harris at (717)772-6955 or fharris@pahouse.net.
