MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Kathy L. Rapp
To: All House members
Subject: RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE HONORABLE CHARLES WARREN STONE

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing the life and work of The Honorable Charles Warren Stone on the 170th anniversary of his birth.

Born on June 29, 1843, Mr. Stone served as principal of the Union School in Warren and was later elected superintendent of the schools of Warren County. That same year, he was chosen to serve as principal of the academy at Erie; and while teaching school, Mr. Stone studied law and was admitted to the Warren County bar in 1866.

Due to his exceptional performance of his duties on the board of school directors, he was nominated as a candidate to the House of Representatives of this Commonwealth and was elected in 1869. In 1876, he was elected to the Senate of this Commonwealth where he served as chair of the Judiciary General Committee. He served as Lieutenant Governor during the term of Governor Henry M. Hoyt from 1879 to 1883, and in 1887, he was appointed as Secretary of the Commonwealth and served in this post until his resignation to accept a nomination for Congress. Mr. Stone was elected to Congress and served until 1899. After his retirement from Congress, Mr. Stone returned to the practice of law and remained very active in his community.

Please join me in honoring a man who dedicated his life to serving his community, his Commonwealth and his country.
