MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 30, 2013 11:42 AM
From: Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown
To: All House members
Subject: RESOLUTION: PENNSYLVANIA HEALTH CARE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS DAY

In the near future I will be introducing a resolution recognizing May 8, 2013 as Pennsylvania Health Care Information Technology Awareness Day. It should be noted that this resolution is based upon former House Resolution 244 of 2009, which was prime-sponsored by former Representative Josh Shapiro.

As you may be aware, the United States spends more than $2.6 trillion a year on health care or 17.6% of its G.D.P. Many of these expenditures are unnecessary and can be attributed to clinical and administrative waste, theft and excessive costs. However, in recent years much has been done in Pennsylvania in the way of addressing this particular issue.

Specifically, Act 121 of 2012, the Pennsylvania eHealth Information Technology Act, established the Pennsylvania eHealth Partnership Authority as well as developed a mechanism for creating a health information exchange in Pennsylvania. Overall, the hospitals and health systems in our Commonwealth are outpacing hospitals nationally in their adoption and use of clinical information technology and information management systems. Therefore, the purpose of this resolution is to continue to promote better health care through broader adoption of advanced health care information technology and management systems.

Lastly, I encourage all of my colleagues to join me in touting the benefits and cost-effectiveness of instituting health care information technology and management systems. If you should have any questions or concerns regarding this legislation, please contact Fran Harris at (717) 772-6955 or fharris@pahouse.net.
