MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 2, 2014 03:57 PM
From: Representative Stephen Barrar and Rep. Chris Sainato
To: All House members
Subject: PA National Guard Day Resolution

On April 9, 2014, we plan to recognize our Pennsylvania National Guard by introducing a resolution designating April 9, 2014, as “National Guard Day” in Pennsylvania.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2013, the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and the National Guard Association will host their annual Pennsylvania National Guard Day at the Capital. The East Wing Rotunda will be filled with information and interesting displays about the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Department.

Our Pennsylvania National Guard is one of the top ten employers in the Commonwealth with approximately 3,500 of the Guard members serving full-time with the remaining 15,500 serving as “traditional” Guard members who train on a part time basis while pursuing a civilian education or career.

As you may know, the Army has proposed cuts to force structure and aviation units that will reduce the size and combat and domestic response capabilities of the PA National Guard. As the chairmen of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, we have a high level of interest in this matter. We know that the PA National Guard is looking forward to sharing some of the details and actions they are taking to prevent uninformed actions that would cause unnecessary and irreversible impact to the Commonwealth’s force.

During Pennsylvania National Guard Day, 2013, the Pennsylvania National Guard Association will host a breakfast briefing in 60 East Wing beginning at 7:30 a.m. Plan now to join the Adjutant General and his staff at this breakfast event. At about 8 a.m., the Adjutant General and PNGAS leadership will brief legislators and members of their staffs on issues of importance.

Please join us on this legislation. We would appreciate your support and co-sponsorship.
