Subject: | Municipal Police Officers Education & Training Commission Appointments (Previously HB 1781) |
In the near future, I will re-introduce legislation to change the composition of the membership of the Municipal Police Officers Education & Training Commission (MPOETC). Current law provides for the Governor to appoint an FBI Special-Agent-In-Charge to the Commission. That position is currently vacant and has been since 2007. I believe it would be much more worthwhile to have a member of the State Fraternal Order of Police Lodge serve on the Commission since they are much more in tune than an FBI Agent with the needs of municipal police officers in the Commonwealth. Furthermore, it is my understanding that the Department of Justice has advised the FBI not to participate in the Commission because they do not want them to be involved in any supervisory role with municipal law enforcement. Therefore, my legislation will remove the gubernatorial appointment of an FBI Agent to the Commission and replace it with a gubernatorial appointment of a member of the State FOP Lodge. Last Session, this bill passed the house 189-0. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. Previous co-sponsors include: JOZWIAK, BARBIN, CALTAGIRONE, KNOWLES, D.
