Subject: | Resolution – Recognizing March 2017 as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing March 2017 as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women in the United States. Sadly, 50,260 individuals are expected to lose their lives to colorectal cancer in 2017. However, mortality rates for colorectal cancer have decreased largely due to prevention and early detection through screening. If everyone 50 years of age or older would have regular colorectal cancer screening tests, 60% of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented each year. Since 2000, March has been recognized as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” by various advocacy groups, public officials, health care providers, and patients. The purpose of this designation is to generate awareness of colorectal cancer and to encourage people to learn more about how to prevent the disease through a healthy lifestyle, diet, and regular screenings. Please join me in raising awareness of this horrible disease |
