MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 18, 2017 10:24 AM
From: Representative Barry J. Jozwiak
To: All House members
Subject: Alcoholic (Hard) Cider

Recently, the federal definition of Hard Cider changed. On the heels of those changes, Act 39 and Act 166 made similar changes to the Liquor Code. “Alcoholic Cider” was amended to increase the alcohol by volume from 5% to 8.5%. It was further changed to permit carination of those products at a level which does not exceed 6.4 grams per liter.

Even though these changes were made, the Liquor Code’s definition of “Alcoholic Cider” still contains language that permits products to be made through alcoholic fermentation of any fruit or fruit juice.

Generally, across the world, alcoholic cider is defined as a beverage which is made thorough alcoholic fermentation of apples or pears. This bill will make the final change to the definition of “Alcoholic Cider” which will have our definition match the federal definition, as well as the world-wide industry standard regarding such products.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to consider co-sponsoring my legislation.
