Subject: | Day of the Girl Resolution |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating October 11, 2017 as “Day of the Girl” in Pennsylvania. On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 of each year as the “International Day of the Girl Child” to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The United States and 97 other countries supported and cosponsored the resolution. The “Day of the Girl” campaign focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. This year marks the fifth observance. The resolution will reinforce the General Assembly’s support of increasing girls’ achievements in education, including science and math-related activities and high school graduation rates. In addition, the resolution will suggest revising school curricula to promote positive messages related to girls. Finally, the resolution will encourage girls to reach their full potential, pursue their dreams, and leave an indelible mark on the world. The resolution also will honor all those involved in the “Day of the Girl” in Pennsylvania, including Girls on the Run, the Girl Scouts, the Women’s and Girls’ Foundation, the Girls Coalition of Southwestern Pennsylvania and other organizations throughout the state celebrating the sixth annual Day of the Girl. I hope you will join me in sponsoring and supporting this resolution. Thank you. |
