Subject: | Resolution Designating March 2018 as “Disabilities Awareness Month” |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating March 2018 as “Disabilities Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly one in five Americans have a disability, which translates into 56.7 million individuals. In this Commonwealth specifically, approximately 14.4%, or an estimated 1.8 million residents, under 65 years of age have a disability. Although individuals with disabilities are provided protections under both federal and state law, discriminatory practices still persist in areas such as housing, employment, and public accommodations. The purpose of my resolution is to recognize the prevalence of inequities within our society regarding the treatment of individuals with disabilities, as well as to acknowledge the efforts made throughout history to institute civil protections for all Americans. It is for these reasons and more that I ask my colleagues to join me in co-sponsoring this very important and meaningful resolution. |
