Subject: | Co-Sponsorship: Resolution recognizing September 9, 2018 as “National Grandparents Day” in Pennsylvania |
In the coming days, I plan to introduce a Resolution recognizing September 09, 2018 as “National Grandparents Day” in Pennsylvania. As you may know, the first Sunday after Labor Day is annually recognized as National Grandparents Day in the interest of strengthening family bonds, honoring family history, and encouraging visits to older relatives who require long-term care or in-home care. In addition, as a part of National Grandparents Day observances, children and youth in participating communities are invited to join the Forget-Me-Not visitation program that pairs young volunteers with older adults. Initiatives like Forget-Me-Not are instrumental in helping to educate our youth about the important contributions seniors have made throughout our history and to recognize Congress’ original intent for observance of this this day – “To honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.” As such, it is with these reasons in mind that I am introducing this Resolution.
