MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 28, 2018 02:48 PM
From: Representative Jack Rader, Jr.
To: All House members
Subject: Auto Insurance Notification

In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation which would require automobile insurers to notify PennDOT and any lienholder or lessor when an insured switches to a new insurance company.

I have had numerous complaints from constituents in my district that when they switch automobile insurers they have received letters from PennDOT notifying them that they no longer have automobile insurance and are facing suspension of registration. These letters are sent because the new insurers do not notify PennDOT that the insured has switched insurers. The constituent then becomes responsible for contacting the new insurer and provide proof of insurance to PennDOT. This is a time-consuming task for consumers, ensuring that all records are accurate.

My legislation will require automobile insurers to notify PennDOT, and any lienholder or lessor within 10 days of the issuance of a new insurance policy. Currently, automobile insurers are only required to notify PennDOT when an insured’s policy is canceled.

I hope you will join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation.
