In the near future, I will be reintroducing legislation that would create the Manufacturing and Apprenticeship Grant Program. This legislation would help train Pennsylvania’s workforce for high-tech manufacturing jobs that are good-paying and family sustaining. This legislation was formerly SB 811 of the 2017-18 session. According to the United States Department of Labor, the average starting salary for individuals who complete an apprenticeship is $50,000 per year and earn $300,000 more during their career than non-apprenticeship workers. Additionally, for every $1 a business invests into an apprenticeship programs, businesses realize an approximate return-on-investment of $1.50. The lack of “skilled labor” and “qualified salespeople” are two of the most important issues affecting Pennsylvania businesses. The Conference Board reported that in the coming decade, the United States is at great risk for occupational shortages in health care and skilled labor. In addition to this, Pennsylvania is currently being forecasted to experience a shortage of nearly 170,000 skilled workers by 2020. Please join me in sponsoring this vital legislation and help raise Pennsylvania’s wage to one fair wage for all workers. The risk to our workforce is clear and this legislation would help to stop this potential scarcity of skilled workers.
