Subject: | National Guard Day & Veterans Day at the Capitol (September 20) |
On September 20th, the Pennsylvania National Guard will hold its annual “National Guard & Veterans Day” at the Capitol. We will be introducing a resolution honoring the PA National Guard on this occasion. In 1747, Benjamin Franklin formed the "Associators," the precursor to the PA National Guard. And in 1755, the General Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania formally enacted its first militia law. The past 264 years have seen much cooperation and support from the General Assembly for the Pennsylvania militia, the Pennsylvania National Guard and the soldiers and airmen who proudly serve this Commonwealth and this nation. Today, Pennsylvania has one of the largest National Guard forces in the nation. Meanwhile, with nearly 800,000 veterans, this Commonwealth has one of the largest veteran populations in the country. Pennsylvania has numerous programs serving our veterans community, including the award-winning PA VETConnect program. On September 20th, the PA Department of Military & Veterans Affairs and the PA National Guard will come to the Capitol to highlight their importance to the Commonwealth through displays in the East Wing Rotunda and a morning presentation for legislators. Adjutant General Mark Schindler also plans to address the Senate on the occasion. This year's theme, “National Guard and Veterans Day at the Capitol: Together We Serve” pays tribute to our citizens, soldiers and airmen of the Pennsylvania National Guard, veterans of all services and components who have served and their families Please join us in supporting the Pennsylvania National Guard by signing onto this resolution, which is similar to SR 159 of 2019. Please contact Nate Silcox in Senator Stefano’s Office if you have any questions. |
