| Every gallon of motor fuel pumped in Pennsylvania is taxed 76 cents per gallon. 57.6 cents of this is the PA state gasoline tax, or Motor Fuel Tax Rate, which is one of the highest gas tax rates in the nation. Pennsylvania’s diesel fuel tax is a whopping 74.1 cents per gallon, meaning every gallon pumped is taxed 98.5 cents per gallon when adding in the federal tax. The money from the PA state gasoline tax is to go for repairs on roads and bridges across the state, yet PennDOT still has budgetary woes and continues asking for more funding for these projects. I feel consumers have a right to know how much of their hard-earned money is going to the gas tax with every gallon of gas they purchase, therefore I am reintroducing the “Fuel Tax Transparency Act” which will require stickers to be placed on retail service station gasoline pumps displaying the rates of federal and state Liquid fuels (motor gasoline and gasohol) tax and Fuels (undyed diesel and undyed kerosene) taxes. This legislation was Senate Bill 610 last session, cosponsored by Senator Hutchinson. Similar legislation was recently signed into law and implemented in Ohio. I hope you will join me in this simple, but important measure to increase the transparency of fuel prices for Pennsylvania consumers. Thank you for your consideration. |
