MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 17, 2012 10:48 AM
From: Representative William C. Kortz, II
To: All House members
Subject: Global War on Terrorism Veterans' Bonus Program (Former HB 2533)

In the near future, I will be re-introducing legislation – former House Bill 2533 – that will create a free-standing act to establish a Global War on Terrorism Veterans’ Bonus Program to provide one-time payments of $500 to eligible veterans.

Under my proposal, eligibility would be limited to veterans who separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions and who served on active duty in direct support of the Global War on Terrorism. Direct support of the Global War on Terrorism is shown by the veteran having received the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, or the Afghanistan Campaign Medal. Additionally, the veteran must have been or is a legal resident of this Commonwealth as determined under this act and United States military. In order to fund this important program, my legislation provides for bond authorization.

In the past, we have created bonus programs for veterans’ of the Persian Gulf War and World War II. However, Pennsylvania does not have a veterans’ bonus program for those who have served our country proudly during the past 11 years in the Global War on Terrorism. My legislation ensures that the brave men and women who have served in this on-going war will not go unnoticed, and will instead be rewarded for their service.

Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
