Subject: | Corporate Accountability Act |
I will be introducing legislation, in the near future, that would create the Corporate Accountability Act. As a result of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling, corporations can spend freely to influence a political campaign without the approval of shareholders. Further, the contributions are not made known to the shareholders or the public. This legislation, previously introduced by Auditor General-Elect DePasquale, will require corporations to obtain shareholder approval before contributing an annual aggregate sum exceeding $10,000. It will make the contributions public knowledge and require proper notification to the shareholders. Co-sponsors of House Bill 1002 from last session included CALTAGIRONE, CARROLL, COHEN, GERBER, HORNAMAN, JOSEPHS, KAUFFMAN, MUNDY, SANTARSIERO AND CONKLIN.
