Subject: | Co-Sponsorship: Pennsylvania MESA Initiative |
In the near future I will be introducing legislation that will establish a Pennsylvania MESA Initiative administered by the State Board of Education for the purpose of increasing exposure, educational motivation and achievement of students in science, engineering and mathematics and build individual and regional capacity to compete for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) based jobs in the global market with an emphasis on students, parents, educators and employers from urban and rural groups who have historically had the lowest levels of high school degree attainment and participation in college and graduate education. MESA has received national recognition for its success in other states. MESA has been named as one of the most innovative public programs in the country by Innovations in American Government, a project of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the Ford Foundation. MESA is a winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. MESA is the largest consortium of programs to receive National Science Foundation scholarships earmarked to support community college students who transfer to four-year institutions. Last session, this was HB867. Previous Co-Sponsors included – Bishop, V. Brown, Caltagirone, Carroll, Clymer, Cohen, D.
