Subject: Energy Efficiency in State Government Buildings Act - Former 179
 
I strongly believe that state government should be a leader by example in implementing and promoting energy efficiency and in using renewable fuels. The Commonwealth is a large consumer of energy and the expense for energy represents a substantial operating cost for state government.

My proposed legislation will:
  • Require the Department of General Services (DGS) to establish an energy efficiency savings target for reducing energy use in state government facilities.
  • Establish a comprehensive energy efficiency program for state buildings.
  • Require DGS to review and revise Commonwealth procurement policies and procedures to ensure that new equipment purchased by the commonwealth meets the Energy Star standards.
  • Require DGS to establish a schedule for increasing the number of hybrid and other alternative fueled vehicles within the state fleet.
  • Establish an Interagency Task Force on Energy to help coordinate state agency actions to reduce energy.
Lowering the costs of energy for state government will result in reduced overall operating costs. This is not only a savings to Pennsylvania taxpayers, but will also lead to economic development opportunities for small businesses providing energy efficiency services and producing alternative fuels.
