Subject: | Reintroduction of Resolution: Urging Congress to close the “Halliburton Loophole” (Similar to HR 296 of 2011-2012) |
I will soon reintroduce a resolution urging Congress to close the infamous “Halliburton loophole.” As you may know, the Halliburton loophole exempts the oil and natural gas industries from federal Safe Drinking Water Act requirements. My resolution urges Congress to repeal this exemption so that these companies are required to comply with the Act’s safeguards with regard to their hydraulic fracturing operations located near drinking water sources. This legislation also urges Congress to require the industry to disclose the chemicals used in the hydraulic fracturing process, as well as disclose the chemical constituents currently considered proprietary rights of the company, in the event of a medical emergency. In light of the many accidents that have occurred from hydraulic fracturing operations across our nation and here in Pennsylvania, closure of the Halliburton loophole would certainly be a step in the right direction toward protecting our water supplies and providing transparency into drilling operations.
