MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Observing March 2013 as "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania"

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution observing the month of March 2013 as “National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. I hope everyone in the House will cosponsor this important resolution.

Since 1999, March has been designated as "National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" by the Prevent Cancer Foundation, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable and the Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition. The designation and the promotion of it attempts to generate widespread awareness about colorectal cancer and to encourage people to learn more about how to prevent the disease through a healthy lifestyle and regular screenings. Education can help inform the public of methods of prevention and symptoms of early detection.

The effort is important because colorectal cancer serves as the second leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States. Doctors could prevent a majority of colorectal cancer deaths from occurring if everyone 50-years-old and older had regular colorectal cancer screening tests.

The designation specifically aims to inform people in Pennsylvania and across the nation of the importance of the screening and treatment of this disease and the simple actions people can take to prevent cancer from forming. The resolution will include information on screening and tips on how residents can stop cancer from occurring.
