Subject: | Adding Accommodations to Funeral Director Law |
In the near future, I plan on reintroducing legislation (HB 2229) that would amend the Funeral Director Law, to ensure that individuals with disabilities can pursue a career in this field. The need for additional accommodations for individuals with disabilities came to light when one of my constituents, who happens to be in a wheelchair, spoke about the obstacles he has faced in his failed effort to become a funeral director. At issue is the fact that Pennsylvania has a single license to become a funeral director. Pennsylvania is one of 22 states with a single license, which requires candidates in this field to complete education and training on the business and psycho-social aspects of funeral directing, as well as embalming and preparing human remains. In 28 other states, individuals can apply for a license as either an embalmer or as a funeral director. My proposed legislation would not alter Pennsylvania's current single license status, but instead would require the State Board of Funeral Directors to adopt regulations within the Funeral Director Law to ensure accommodations are made for individuals with disabilities, so that these individuals are not precluded, due to a disability, from becoming a funeral director. It is hard to believe that in our society where we have made great strides in protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities, that such a barrier to an occupation remains. We have an opportunity now to make a difference; I hope that you will join me in supporting this effort.
