MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 5, 2013 01:12 PM
From: Representative Brandon P. Neuman
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Designating the Month of April as “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania

I invite your co-sponsorship of a Resolution designating the month of April 2013 as “Distracted Driving Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

The opportunity to be distracted while driving on America’s roadways has significantly increased in the last decade by the routine usage of cell phones and other electronic devices in our daily lives. These devices, when handled while driving, divert attention away from the operation of a vehicle and onto the device. As a result, distracted driving has become a serious threat to the health and safety of Pennsylvania’s drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. Other common forms of distracting driving include: eating and drinking; smoking; engaging in conversation; reading; adjusting the radio, CD player, or MP3 player; and using a navigation system while driving.

According to national statistics, distracted driving caused 10,567 vehicle accidents, 387,000 injuries, and 3,331 deaths in 2011. The most effective way to end distracted driving is to educate all Pennsylvanians about the danger it poses to our safety and wellbeing. Consequently, it is important for parents, teens, teachers, and community leaders to discuss the importance of safe driving habits.

Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
