Subject: | March 2013 as Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating March 2013 as Intellectual Disabilities Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. In fiscal year 2012/2013, nearly 54,699 Pennsylvanians with intellectual disabilities received services and supports and more than 31,500 children, including significant numbers of children who have intellectual disabilities, received early intervention services. In addition, there are 15,335 persons with intellectual disabilities who continue to wait for services. These services and supports ensure that all citizens of Pennsylvania who have intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to participate in the range of life experiences we all enjoy in our homes and communities; inclusion in schools, neighborhoods, businesses and places of worship. Public awareness and education improve the community's understanding of intellectual disabilities and the services and supports needed to meet the specific needs and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities. |
