Subject: | Rank of the Distinguished Warfare Medal for Drone Warfare |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution that would encourage the Department of Defense to reconsider the rank of the Distinguished Warfare Medal. The recently unveiled Distinguished Warfare Medal by the Department of Defense February 13, 2013, recognizes military achievement in cyber warfare or combat drone operations for engagements that do not include actions of valor in live combat. No doubt, the recipients of this proposed medal are great contributors to the War on Terror or any contingency operations; however, they are not personally being exposed to traditional combat that puts their lives at risk. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Military Order of the Purple Heart are currently urging the Department of Defense to reassess the rank of the Distinguished Warfare Medal for the same reasons listed above. This proposed drone medal would be ranked above the Bronze Star for Valor medal and the Purple Heart. For these reasons, I am introducing this resolution to strongly encourage the Department of Defense to lower the precedence of this new medal below the honors for those who risk their lives for the good of the nation. Please join me in sponsoring this legislation. |
