MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 15, 2013 11:42 AM

To: All House members
Subject: Home Theft- Amending the Notary Public Law

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that would amend the Notary Public Law to update requirements for persons becoming a notary and adding significant protections against fraudulent activity.

There have been an increasing number of crimes committed by those in this official function. While the overwhelming majority of notaries are exemplary in carrying out their duties, those drawn to fraud cause substantial harm often resulting in persons losing their homes.

Current notaries agree that the notary process is outdated and requires reform.

My bill would require notary applicants to submit to a criminal background check, and tighten up the process for acquiring an official seal. There are further requirements for keeping a sequential journal of official acts by the notary and increased penalties for violations.

The new legislation safeguards the integrity of the process and further protect all of our citizens. Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
