House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 19, 2013 12:45 PM
From: Representative Sid Michaels Kavulich
To: All House members
Subject: Cosponsor Request for Re-introduction of Legislation Designating the 8th Avenue (U.S. Business Route 6) Bridge in Carbondale as the 109th Infantry Bridge

I plan to soon re-introduce House Bill 2018 from the 2011-12 legislative session. The bill would name and dedicate the bridge over the Lackawanna River along 8th Avenue (U.S. Business 6) in downtown Carbondale as the 109th Infantry Bridge.

I drafted the legislation last session after the City of Carbondale requested the naming and dedication after the 109th Infantry. After receiving the letter, I had research conducted into the history and accomplishments of the 109th Infantry and the sacrifices of the soldiers within it. I felt humbled by what I learned about just what those who had served in the infantry had given over the years to secure and protect our freedom.

The units of this regiment date back to the American Revolution. Personnel of the 109th were, and are to this day, engaged in all wars of the nation. Because of the sacrifices of its personnel, great differences occurred in both World War I and II. The service of the 109th Infantry in the Battle of the Bulge is legendary. For all these reasons and more, I feel honored to again sponsor legislation to name the 8th Avenue Bridge over the Lackawanna River in downtown Carbondale as the 109th Infantry Bridge.

The House had unanimously passed the legislation during the last session. It remained in Senate committee when the session ended. Those who cosponsored the legislation previously include: BOBACK , K. BOYLE, BRADFORD, BRENNAN , BROOKS , CALTAGIRONE , CAUSER , COX , CUTLER , DALEY , DENLINGER , DiGIROLAMO , DONATUCCI, ELLIS , FABRIZIO , FARRY, FLECK , GEORGE , GILLEN, GOODMAN, HALUSKA , HEFFLEY, HORNAMAN , KULA , MAHONEY , MAJOR , MARSICO , MILLARD , MULLERY, MURPHY, QUINN , READSHAW , ROCK , SCAVELLO , SONNEY , STERN , SWANGER , VULAKOVICH , YOUNGBLOOD and KORTZ
I hope that you will join with me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. Thanks.
