Subject: | Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Necessity of Inclusive Domestic Violence Programs |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution urging all Pennsylvania groups involved in the effort to stop domestic violence to implement the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) inclusion mandate. According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, more than five million men and nearly five million women experience some form of domestic violence every year. Unfortunately, male, LGBT, and African-American victims have experienced discrimination from groups that provide services to domestic violence victims and have been designated “Underserved Victim Populations.” When VAWA was renewed by Congress on March 7, 2013, it included a provision prohibiting discrimination on the basis of “race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual identity, or disability” by groups involved in the effort to stop domestic violence. This mandate applies to domestic violence shelters, domestic violence coalitions, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, judges, and other groups involved in the effort to stop domestic violence. Please join me in supporting domestic violence victims by urging groups that assist these individuals to implement the VAWA inclusion mandate. Thank you for your support of this important legislation. |
