MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 23, 2013 03:01 PM
From: Representative Thomas P. Murt
To: All House members
Subject: Cap Retirement Benefits of New Members of the General Assembly

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to cap the retirement benefits of new members of the General Assembly at 75% of the legislator’s salary. The 75% cap will be applied to the legislator’s Maximum Single Life Annuity before reduction for options and other benefit features. For purposes of determining the legislative salary to be capped, the member’s highest twelve consecutive months of compensation as a legislator will be used.

Considering the current unfunded liability of the Commonwealth’s public pension systems, I believe it is imperative that legislators lead by example and impose a cap on retirement benefits.
