MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 14, 2013 04:20 PM
From: Representative Michelle F. Brownlee
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution designating June 2013 as “Healthy Living and Healthy Eating Month” in Pennsylvania.

In the near future, I plan to introduce a Resolution designating June 2013 as “Healthy Living and Healthy Eating Month” in Pennsylvania.

As many of you know, obesity is second only to smoking among the top preventable causes of death in our nation. Acting in concert with medical comorbidities including heart disease and diabetes, obesity is set to become the number one preventable cause of death in our nation. Nearly two out of three American’s are overweight or obese. These figures amount to a 50% increase from just over a decade ago.

To help curb the increase of obesity and obesity related illnesses, Dr. Ian Smith -- a leading physician, author, and television personality developed a national health initiative called the “50 Million Pound Challenge” to encourage people to come together and take control of their health by getting fit through exercise, losing excess weight, and reversing many of the deadly health risks associated with being overweight. To drive the message of “Healthy Living and Healthy Eating” further, this past January, Dr. Smith addressed SEPTA employees in Philadelphia in an effort to motivate them to implement healthy lifestyle changes and to share his personal health tips. Inspired by what they heard, more than 100 SEPTA employees have begun following Dr. Smith’s 50 Million Pound Challenge and, many have in-fact, adopted healthier lifestyles and eating habits.

It is with the motivation of a promoting a healthier lifestyle and curbing the increase in obesity in mind, that I am offering this Resolution. If you have any questions, please contact my Research Analyst -- Takesha Latham at 717-787-3480 or via email at tlatham@pahouse.net.
