MEMORANDUM

Subject: DPW Budget Cuts Resolution

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution urging Governor Tom Corbett and Department of Public Welfare (DPW) officials to visit any facility which could be subject to a cut in the 2013-14 state budget and future state budgets.

Over the past two budget cycles, DPW has experienced significant cuts that have impacted health and human services programs. Such programs include: community based family centers, county child welfare, child care assistance, human services development fund block grant, homeless assistance, and health care clinics. These programs are vital to the livelihood of many individuals and families throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, centers that assist mentally and physically disabled citizens will also be affected by funding cuts in the budget. Finally, state centers operated by DPW Bureau of Supports for People with Intellectual Disabilities including: Ebensburg Center, Polk Center, White Haven Center, Hamburg Center, and Selinsgrove Center would be directly affected by a decrease in the DPW budget. Many citizens who suffer from either a physical or mental disability rely on these centers to assist them in leading an independent lifestyle despite their disability.

My resolution urges Governor Corbett and DPW officials to visit these centers and other facilities that could be subjected to a cut in the 2013-14 state budget and future state budgets. These facilities should receive a fair assessment prior to losing funding. My goal is for current and future administration officials to witness and understand the impact budgetary cuts have on our most vulnerable citizens. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution in recognition of the services these facilities provide and the patients, families, and communities they serve.
