Subject: | Resolution commemorating the 120th anniversary of the founding of Valley Forge State Park as Pennsylvania's first state park. |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the 120th anniversary of the founding of Valley Forge State Park as Pennsylvania’s first state park. Valley Forge National Historical Park began as Pennsylvania’s first state park on May 30, 1893. This park was created by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to memorialize George Washington’s Continental Army encampment at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-1778. During this encampment, these troops endured unbearable hardships that eventually came to symbolize the courage, determination, and perseverance of early settlers to establish an independent nation. The Valley Forge Park Commission and other state agencies managed this park until President Gerald Ford visited Valley Forge on July 4, 1976, to sign legislation authorizing the federal government to take control of the park, thereby creating Valley Forge National Historical Park. Without the commitment of Pennsylvanians to preserve and protect the park’s land and structures, it is possible that this historical site could have been lost for future generations. Accordingly, I hope you will join me in commemorating the 120th anniversary of the founding of Valley Forge State Park as Pennsylvania’s first state park. |
