Subject: | Resolution to proclaim September 23rd, 2013 as “Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day” |
In the near future, I will introduce a resolution proclaiming September 23rd, 2013 as “Restless Legs Syndrome Day” in Pennsylvania. Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs causing an irrestable urge to move them. The disease is difficult to diagnose and has a significant impact on sleep, concentration, and productivity, causing approximately 60 percent of patients to wake three or more times a night with almost half reporting that symptoms adversely affect concentration the following day. While there is no know cure for RLS, groups including the Willis-Ekbom Disease Foundation are working to promote awareness and support, including improved education, diagnosis, research and treatment. Having the General Assembly designate September 23rd, 2013 as “Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania is one way to raise awareness and to urge citizens to support the search for a cure and assist individuals and families who face this disease. |
