MEMORANDUM

Subject: Co-sponsorship: Resolution Recognizing the week of April 6-12, 2014, as “Sexual Assault Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania

In the future, I will be introducing a resolution designating the week of April 6-12, 2014, as “Sexual Assault Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania in conjunction with bringing awareness to public policy initiatives in research prevention and reform as it relates to perpetrators of sexual violence.

Perpetrators of sexual violence do not necessarily display behavior and characteristic traits similar to “traditional” criminal lifestyles, nor do sexual offenders necessarily have criminal backgrounds. In fact, most sexual assaults are committed by individuals known to the victim or the victim’s family members. Furthermore, sexual violence impacts individuals in many ways and can lead to long-term physical and mental health problems.

Therefore, I believe raising awareness about societal myths and behaviors that perpetuate sexual violence, and providing information and prevention strategies, is critical to the health and well-being of all Pennsylvania citizens. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
