Subject: | Resolution - October 2013 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating October 2013 as “National Disability Employment Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. The theme for the 2013 campaign is "Because We Are EQUAL to the Task." National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is a national campaign intended to raise awareness about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. NDEAM began in 1945 when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." Congress removed the word "physically" in 1962 to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities, and in 1988 expanded recognition to a month, changing the name to "National Disability Employment Awareness Month." By designating October 2013 as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we enable all Pennsylvanians to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and encourage all citizens to ensure equal opportunities in the workforce for people with disabilities. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Seidl of my office at 787-4117 or kseidl@pahouse.net. Thank you. |
