MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Cherelle L. Parker
To: All House members
Subject: Condolence Resolution for Augusta "Gussie" Clark

In the near future, I will be introducing a condolence resolution honoring the life and legacy of former Philadelphia City Councilwoman Augusta “Gussie” Clark.

Known as a tireless and passionate advocate for Philadelphia’s public schools, Councilwoman Clark served on Philadelphia City Council from 1980 until her retirement in 2000. She was the second African-American woman elected to City Council and chaired the Committee on Education for 12 years.

Prior to her election to City Council, Councilwoman Clark’s career included stints as an attorney, a publishing assistant, and a librarian. She earned degrees from West Virginia State College, Drexel University (library science), and Temple University (law).

Following her retirement from City Council, Councilwoman Clark served in Mayor John Street’s cabinet.

Councilwoman Clark passed away on October 13, 2013, at the age of 81 leaving behind a son, a daughter, and four grandchildren. Her husband of 47 years, Leroy W. Clark, passed away in 2007.

Please join me in celebrating the life and legacy of Augusta “Gussie” Clark, one of my mentors and an extraordinary champion of public education in Philadelphia.

Thank you for your consideration.
