Subject: | Resolution Designating “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month” |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating October 2013 as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth. Almost one in five students report having been bullied “sometimes” or more often, and many others do not feel safe in school. Bullying can be verbal, physical, and via the Internet and can hurt a child’s self esteem, social interations, and performance in school. Children can be bullied for many reasons, including appearance, cultural accent, or some perceived “difference” in the victim. It is also important to note that bullying is not just about the effects on the victim, but also the impact on all students in the school, including those who witness the behavior and those who engage in the behavior. Bullying Prevention Awareness Month is a month-long effort that encourages everyone to take an active role in the bullying prevention movement. Please join me in designating October 2013 as “Bullying Prevention Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania to help bring bullying to an end. |
