MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 22, 2013 04:52 PM
From: Representative Mark B. Cohen
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Praising Kathleen Kane, Pennsylvania Attorney General

I will soon introduce a Resolution praising the Commonwealth’s first woman Attorney General for her professionalism and her focus on and dedication to implementing the duties of the office she holds.

One of Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s major responsibilities is to protect and defend the rights of all Pennsylvanians. After the United States Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, she showed great strength by fighting against one of Pennsylvania’s - and America’s – last discriminatory statutes. Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey yesterday reached a similar conclusion and withdrew his appeal of a lower court decision allowing statewide same sex marriage in New Jersey.

In a statement made after the federal Defense of Marriage Act was struck down, Attorney General Kane said, “It is our duty… to protect the constitutionality … the rights and dignity of others, and to protect the equality of all men and women in this Commonwealth.” She went on to say, “I know that in this state there are people who don't believe in what we are doing, and I'm not asking them to believe in it. I'm asking them to believe in the constitution.”

Beyond this single issue, Attorney General Kane, a veteran prosecutor and investigator, is aggressively pursuing the Jerry Sandusky – Penn State matter. She has appointed H. Geoffrey Moulton, Jr., a former clerk to US Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, and former federal prosecutor, to lead the office's internal investigation into how the Sandusky child abuse case was handled by then Attorney General Tom Corbett who served an appointed term from 1995 to 1997 and six years as an elected Attorney General from January 2005 to January 2011.

For these and many other efforts made by the Attorney General, including aiding young people to safely navigate and use social media, prosecuting white collar criminals and those engaged in insurance and mortgage fraud, and opposing the merger of US Airways and American Airlines, arguing that the merger almost certainly will mean job losses, higher fares, fewer connections and more costly, yet reduced services for customers, we should offer praise to our Attorney General Kathleen Kane.
