MEMORANDUM

Subject: Resolution Proclaiming November 2013 as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Awareness Month in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan on introducing a resolution proclaiming November 2013 as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSDS), also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, is a rare neurological disorder characterized by severe burning, tenderness, and swelling of an extremity associated with varying degrees of sweating, warmth and/or coolness, flushing, discoloration, and shiny skin. Often times, RSDS progresses from its origin to other areas of the body. In some cases, RSDS can result in permanent deformity and atrophy.

The Pennsylvania General Assembly enacted the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Education Act, Act 62 of 2003, establishing the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Education Program. The RSDS Education Act directs the Department of Health to promote awareness of RSDS and the value of early detection, diagnosis and treatment of the symptoms associated with the disease.

Please consider joining me in supporting this resolution and raising awareness to the plight of those who suffer from this terrible disease.

Should you have any questions about this resolution, please contact Mason Lane at mlane@pahouse.net or (717) 787-5741.
