House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: November 26, 2013 03:03 PM
From: Representative Karen Boback
To: All House members
Subject: Youth Leadership Advisory Committee

As legislators, most of us have the opportunity to attend Eagle Scout ceremonies, scholastic and athletic recognition events, Junior Firefighter induction nights, etc. What prompts some of our youth to seek out leadership positions in their communities while others revert to gang memberships or unhealthy lifestyles?

In an attempt to encourage more of our youth to participate in positive, character building activities in their communities I am preparing to introduce a resolution that will direct the Joint State Government Commission (JSGC) to establish an advisory committee to study youth leadership and community involvement in Pennsylvania. In consultation with the advisory committee, JSGC will:

  • Conduct a comprehensive survey of existing youth development and leadership programs in Pennsylvania;
  • Identify the successes these programs have had with involving youth in their communities;
  • Make recommendations for successful collaborations between youth-serving organizations and local communities; and
  • Issue a report of the findings and recommendations to the House of Representatives.

I hope that you will consider joining me in cosponsoring this resolution.
