Subject: Legislation - Bedding & Upholstered Furniture Law, modernize & provide appropriate enforcement
 
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation amending Pennsylvania’s “Bedding and Upholstered Furniture Law,” enacted in 1937. My legislation would modernize the law, provide for appropriate enforcement authority and ensure the safety of consumers throughout the commonwealth.

Specifically, my legislation would:
  • Reduce administrative paperwork and impose a flat registration fee.
  • Ensure proper labeling of bedding and upholstered furniture.
  • Require a sterilization and disinfection application process.
  • Prevent the use of secondhand stuffing or materials in bedding or upholstered furniture, unless the item is being renovated for and returned to the original owner, or the stuffing has been disinfected by a process approved by the Department of Labor & Industry.
  • Impose fines for violations.
  • Update the language of the 76-year old law so that it is clear and easy to understand.
