Subject: Resolution honoring Sister Francesca Onley, retiring president of Holy Family University

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the retiring president of Holy Family University, Sister Francesca Onley.

Sister Francesca Onley, President of Holy Family University, located on Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia, announced her retirement to members of the university community on January 13, 2014. She has been president of the university for 32 years. Sister Onley previously served as a member of both the Nazareth Academy Grade School and Nazareth Academy High School faculties, as teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and principal. She was a member of one of the first graduating classes of what was then Holy Family College, receiving a Bachelor’s of Arts in Education, Business and she received a Master’s of Science in Secondary Education, Business from Marywood College in Scranton. She also earned a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Sister Onley worked as Assistant to the President at Holy Family University for a year before becoming Holy Family University’s fourth President and Chief Administrative Officer on November 22, 1981. Her entire education career has been spent in a few-block radius in Northeast Philadelphia, but her work has taken her to international locations in Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia, as well as throughout the United States. Sister Onley, at 80 years old, is the longest-tenured college president in the region and, under her leadership, Holy Family University has added master's and doctoral programs, became a university, and dramatically expanded enrollment, as well as constructed many buildings and launched new University sites.

Through these myriad accomplishments, Sister Francesca Onley has demonstrated her commitment to higher education, as well as to the city of Philadelphia. Therefore, I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring a resolution that formally honors Sister Francesca Onley, of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, for her service and dedication during her time as President of Holy Family University.
