Subject: Co-sponsorship of Resolution - Commemorating 50th Anniversary of HACC

In the near future, I am planning to introduce a resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College (originally established and referred to as the “Harrisburg Area Community College”).

In 1963, legislation was enacted to establish a community college system in Pennsylvania. On February 14, 1964, the Harrisburg Area Community College was granted a charter by the Department of Education, which made HACC the first community college to be established in this Commonwealth. On September 21, 1964, HACC opened its doors and welcomed 426 students. In 1967, HACC became the first Pennsylvania community college to be accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 2014, HACC is the largest community college in the Commonwealth. HACC has five major campuses throughout south-central Pennsylvania, which are located in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York, and includes several off-site centers, as well as online classes. HACC currently enrolls more than 20,000 degree-seeking students per semester. This dynamic educational institution offers career associate and transfer degree programs, diploma and certificate programs, and work force development programs in health care; computer training; fire training; law enforcement and safety; security programs and technology and trades. In the past 50 years, more than 287,000 students have taken credit courses at HACC, and more than 380,000 students have received training and instruction in noncredit programs. HACC has more than 50,000 alumni.

In 2007, HACC adopted its new identity “HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College,” to better reflect its current, expansive service to multiple communities of students within a ten-county region. HACC will celebrate its 50th anniversary beginning on February 13, 2014, and events will be conducted throughout the year to further celebrate this special milestone.
