Subject: | Harley-Davidson Motorcycle as the Official State Motorcycle of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that designates the Harley-Davidson motorcycle as the official state motorcycle of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The first Harley-Davidson factory was open in 1906 by founders William S. Harley, Arthur Davidson, Walter Davidson, and William A. Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since the company’s inception, the Harley Davidson motorcycle has become a revered American icon that is recognized around the world. Today, the Harley-Davidson corporate headquarters continues to be located on the site of the original Milwaukee plant. However, the current largest Harley-Davidson manufacturing facility is located in my legislative district in the city of York. In fact, the York facility makes more than 60 percent of the company’s motorcycles and employs approximately 2,650 people. Additionally, this facility is considered by Harley Davidson to be the “Factory Tour Capital” and draws many tourists from across the nation and world. Considering the importance of this facility to many of the Commonwealth’s workers and to Pennsylvania’s tourism industry, I believe the Harley Davidson motorcycle is as much a symbol of Pennsylvania as it is a symbol of this great nation. An American-made motorcycle manufactured and revered by so many Pennsylvanians deserves to be officially designated as a state symbol, and I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
