Subject: | Resolution - 50th Anniversary of General Douglas MacArthur's Death |
I will be introducing a resolution commemorating the death of General Douglas MacArthur, who passed away 50 years ago on April 5, 1964. General MacArthur served in the United States Army from 1903 to 1964. He grew up with a father who was a general in the Army and began his military career early. He graduated first in his class from West Point and continued to garner great success in both the World Wars where he became the youngest general. In World War II, Gen. MacArthur was brought out of retirement to become the Supreme Commander of the Southwest Pacific Area. He reclaimed the Philippine Islands from the occupation of Japan. He also accepted the unconditional surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945, which ended the Second World War. Throughout his career, Gen. MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor, three Distinguished Service Crosses, five Army Distinguished Service Medals, a Navy Distinguished Service Medal, seven Silver Stars, a Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star, an Air Medal, and two Purple Hearts. Please join me in honoring the 50th Anniversary of the death of this great general and his successes in his military life.
