Subject: | Resolution Honoring the 50th Anniversary of SEPTA |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring the 50th anniversary of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, better known as SEPTA. SEPTA was created by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1963 and was charged with the planning, development and coordination of a regional transportation system for Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties. SEPTA held its first organizational meeting on February 18, 1964, and beginning with the absorption of the Philadelphia Transit Company (PTC) in September 1968 has evolved to become the nation’s sixth largest public transportation system and the largest in the Commonwealth. SEPTA now has a $1.28 billion operating budget, a $300 million capital budget, 9,300 employees and 340 million riders. In addition, SEPTA’s expenditures contribute more than $3 billion in economic output, support over 26,000 jobs and generate $62.5 million in tax revenue to the Commonwealth. To mark these achievements, SEPTA plans to celebrate with a year-long campaign of special events and programs. As such, please join me in honoring and celebrating the 50th anniversary of SEPTA. |
